Why Motorize Your Window Coverings?

I can’t help but feel proud when standing in front of my house while talking to the neighbors, when suddenly, as if on cue, all my shades lower in unison. For a second or two, I feel very fancy.

If you’ve ever wished for all of your window treatments to move with the touch of a button, or better yet, all on their own, like mine, then motorization might just become your new favorite feature. When I first started selling window coverings, the cost of the motor was more than the shade itself! Today, motorized window coverings are more affordable, with significantly lower costs. However, they are still considered the “fancy” choice for lift systems, so let’s explore why you should consider motorization.

Who Benefits from Motorized Window Coverings?

Motorized window treatments aren’t just about convenience (although that part is pretty sweet). They solve real, everyday problems:

  • Busy homeowners who don’t want to deal with the hassle of opening and closing daily.
  • People with physical limitations need an easier way to operate their window treatments.
  • Frequent travelers seeking to automate shades to give the appearance of being at home.
  • Design-savvy homeowners who enjoy wowing guests with “fancy” (I like that word) features.
  • Eco-conscious homeowners seeking to optimize their home's energy efficiency.
  • Homes with hard-to-reach windows or lots of windows will benefit from the ease of use motorization provides.

If you fall into any of these categories, motorization will transform your daily routine.

The Best Rooms for Motorization

While nearly every room can benefit, some windows are ideal for motorization:

  • Street-facing rooms where privacy and security matter.
  • Bedrooms for instant light control in the morning or evening.
  • Children’s rooms where safety and convenience are a priority.

Keep in mind, motorization has a few practical considerations:

  • Window size may limit product options.
  • You’ll need access to power or a reliable battery option.
  • WiFi or smart home hubs are necessary to enable automation features.

Is It Worth the Investment? (Let’s Do the Math)

If you are thinking about motorization throughout your home, think of the feature as a small daily luxury that pays off in time.

For example, a single motorized upgrade with remote and automation costs about $500. This will definitely depend on the brand you choose. Now, divide the cost by 2,555 days (the average seven-year motor life), and you’re looking at roughly 20 cents per day.

Twenty cents for motorization that adjusts itself? That, my friend, is worth every penny.

Your turn. Use that same math to calculate how much it will cost you to motorize.

Your cost ÷ 2555 = ______ per day

When Should You Invest?

The answer is simple: now!

If you are considering motorization, I highly recommend just doing it!

Window treatments aren’t something you replace every year.  On average, they last about a decade. And motorization is worth the feeling you get when your window treatments move on their own every morning and night. Think about it this way: can you imagine buying a car without power windows today? The same shift is happening in the world of window coverings.

How to Source Motorized Window Treatments

A few things to know before you buy:

  • Motors are brand-specific. If you mix and match vendors, your coverings may not sync together.
  • You can’t retrofit old treatments. Motorization has to be ordered at the time of purchase.
  • Work with a trusted brand. Choose a company that offers both the look you want and a reliable motorization system.

The result? Seamless style, smarter living, and window coverings that genuinely work for your lifestyle.

Why it’s worth every cent.

Motorized window coverings are more than a trend. They’re a feature upgrade you’ll use every day, morning and night. From saving time and adding that “fancy” factor, they’re one investment you won’t regret. And I am willing to bet you will never buy a window treatment without motorization…again! 😉
